Unidentified Flying Poems
Lockerbie: Garlic Press (1980).
This kitchen-table production contains 15 poems in Scots and English written mainly 1970–1980. Some of the poems had been published in Akros and Aquarius, and another accepted by The Little Word Machine just before it ceased publication. I was interested in ‘the long poem’ or poetic sequence, influenced no doubt by the Northumbrian modernist Basil Bunting whose work I was researching in those years. Edwin Morgan was my supervisor on this part-time long-distance project. I was a schoolteacher in Dumfriesshire at that time. The cover was designed by Chris Johnstone, an art-teacher and friend. Here are four of the shorter poems from this collection.
