       The Avoidance of Relationships

I’m told I have a tendency
to avoid expressing my emotions
except in this abandoned language

to me it is like entering
someone else’s cottage
to shelter from the rain

who will not mind at all
if I make myself a cup of tea
and look out of the window

and think about them catching
the full force of the weather
out on the hill or along the shore

walking home in it
rainwater running down
their skin and soaking their shirt.
